Nuthatch

nuthatch crawling along a branch

The Nuthatch is a small, plump bird with a distinctive blue-grey back, rusty-red underparts, and a short, straight beak that it uses to pry insects from bark and crevices in trees. They are agile climbers, using their strong feet to walk upside down along tree trunks and branches.

  • Nuthatches can be seen in the UK throughout the year, and are non-migratory birds that are active all year round. They are most commonly seen during the breeding season from April to July when they can be heard singing a series of clear, whistling notes.
  • Nuthatches are part of the Sittidae family, which includes a small group of birds found in Europe, Asia, and North America. They are known for their unique foraging behavior, using their strong beaks to hammer open nuts and seeds, and for their habit of covering the entrance to their nest with mud to keep out predators.
